Indonesia's Islands
Summary

The government will build an underwater toll road in the new capital city, Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan. Head of the Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT) of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, Danang Parikesit, said the underwater toll road is a submersible crossing tunnel that will connect the capital with the Balikpapan-Samarinda toll road. "Details of the engineering design are being prepared," he said on Monday, January 24, 2022.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing spokesman, Endra Saleh Atmawinata, said the underwater toll road construction plan aims to protect the forest area around the new capital. "We don't want the protected forest and swamp areas from being damaged due to road construction. Therefore, there will be a section that uses an underwater crossing tunnel," he said.
