Djarum Backed Ion Mobility to Enter Indonesian EV Market
Singapore-based company Ion Mobility will build electric vehicle manufacturing plants in Singapore and Indonesia in 2022. The company will launch its first electric motorcycle under the Mobius brand on December 2, 2021.
The cigarette and banking conglomerate Djarum Group-backed startup said Indonesia is its main market. "This is our vision to create an alternative to electric vehicles, towards a sustainable lifestyle in the Southeast Asia region," Mobility Chief Executive Officer James Chan said as quoted by the Straits Times.
Ion Mobility will build an assembly facility in Greater Jakarta. After Indonesia, Ion Mobility will expand its products to Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. "As a brand that is growing in Singapore, we want to sell our products in Singapore. But this is a small market, and as an entrepreneur, I have to look at the bigger market," he said.
