Indonesia to Capitalize on Giant Bauxite Reserves Further
Besides coal and nickel, Indonesia’s bauxite reserves are among the highest in the world. This mining commodity will be worth more if it is processed into downstream products in the form of aluminum. The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry noted that Indonesia's bauxite reserves reached 1.2 billion tons or 4 percent of the world's bauxite reserves of 30.39 billion tons. As a result, Indonesia is ranked sixth among countries with the largest bauxite reserves in the world.
Director of Mineral of Coal Program Development, Sunindyo Suryo, said that there were only two operational bauxite-to-alumina smelters, with a total input capacity of 4.56 million tons of bauxite ore per year. However, he also added that "12 alumina refineries are still under construction, with a total bauxite ore input capacity of more than 35 million tons per year."
