Political Support Behind Andika's Appointment as TNI Commander
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo sent a presidential letter to the House of Representatives (DPR) on the nomination of the Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). DPR chairman Puan Maharani stated that the letter numbered R-50/Pres/10/2021 nominated the Army Chief of Staff General Andika Perkasa as the sole candidate for TNI Commander.
After receiving the president's letter, the DPR will prepare a fit and proper test. Andika will replace the current TNI Commander Air Chief Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto, who will retire on November 8. After receiving the president's letter, the DPR has a maximum of 20 days to approve the nomination, as stipulated in the TNI Law. The fit and proper test will reportedly be carried out by DPR's Defense Commission today, and a plenary meeting will be held on November 8.
