Jokowi to Stop CPO Exports: A Wise Choice?

Summary

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo plans to stop exports of crude palm oil (CPO), nickel and bauxite ores, allowing Indonesia to independently process these raw materials and increase their added values. "At some point, stop CPO exports. We have to turn it into cosmetics, margarine, biodiesels, and other derivative products," Jokowi explained at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Jokowi hopes that all related parties have the courage to stop exports of raw materials, despite potential lawsuits to the World Trade Organization (WTO). In addition, Indonesia must also be ready to face all obstacles in the downstream sector of natural resource processing. To support it, Jokowi has asked ministers to hire international lawyers to defend Indonesia's position in the event of lawsuits.
