Maritime Priority Project: Natuna Sea Fortress

Summary

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo prepares a strategic project in the defense sector by building maritime security facilities in Natuna Waters, Riau Islands. The plan is contained in Attachment I to Presidential Regulation No. 85/2021 on the Government's Work Plan for 2022.

The regulation categorizes strengthening maritime security in Natuna as a major project or strategic priority project. The development of defense facilities in Natuna is ignited by escalating threats from foreign parties and the increasing risk of piracy. Another threat is crimes at sea, including illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and transnational crimes. This project is financed from the state budget with five-year syndicated funding of Rp 12.2 trillion.
