As Generals Lead the Region, Here Are the Risks

The government will allow high-ranking TNI/Polri officers to act as regional heads ahead of the 2024 simultaneous regional head elections. The reason is that regional head elections are held simultaneously, while the end of office term is different for each regional head. There will be 23 provinces, 57 cities, and 191 regencies that need temporary officials between 2022 and 2024. Those areas include Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, and East Java.

Head of Information Center at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Benni Irwan, said that this policy was based on the rules for appointing regional heads. Benni said that the governor's officials came from the middle high leadership and the regent/mayor came from the Pratama high leadership. Later, the selected high-ranking officers are those who already hold high leadership positions in government institutions. "It's been done before," Benni said on Monday (9/27).
