Samin Tan Free from Charges, Will New Precedent for Corruptions Arise?

The Jakarta Corruption Court has acquitted the head of PT Borneo Lumbung Energi & Metal (BLEM), Samin Tan, from bribery charges in managing a mining permit involving a member of the House of Representatives Eni Saragih. A member of the Corruption Court's panel of judges, Teguh Santosa, said that Samin was acquitted because he was a victim of Eni Saragih's extortion.
The judge considered that the money given to Eni was not a bribe because he did not have the authority to administer the Third-Generation Coal Mining Concession Work Agreement (PKP2B) for BLEM's subsidiary, PT Asmin Koalindo Tuhup (AKT). "The authority is the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. The defendant is only a victim of extortion," Teguh said on Monday (8/30).
