Summary

Controversies arose once again over operating licenses for ex-foreign fishing vessels. The Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono confirmed that he would not permit ex-foreign fishing vessels to operate in Indonesian waters. "Right now, it's overfishing; what else are we talking about. In my opinion, it's irrelevant," he said on Friday (7/9).

Environmental activists support Trenggono's attitude. EcoNusa's Chief Executive Officer Bustar Maitar urged the government to keep banning ex-foreign fishing vessels because they often had problems. According to him, the government can provide more space for small fishers by banning ex-foreign vessels. "It is very important to be careful in permitting ex-foreign ships," said Bustar.
