New COVID-19 Variant: Kappa

Indonesia is facing an extra problem besides the Delta variant. A new, more dangerous, and an easily transmitted variant of the COVID-19 virus has appeared in the country. According to Epidemiologist from Australia's Griffith University, Dicky Budiman, the Kappa variant, originated from Delta variant strain or B.1.617, has been found in Jakarta.
Unlike Delta, the COVID-19 Kappa was not among Variants of Concern (VOC) listed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Kappa is still classified as Variants of Interest and initially discovered in India in April 2021. "Kappa is a derivative of B.1.617.1," Dicky explained on Wednesday (6/30).
Dicky revealed that in Melbourne, Australia, Kappa was spreading and infecting easily. "The variant shows similar symptoms as measles, and can easily infect passers-by," he elaborated.
