Second Wave of Layoffs Loom as Mobility Squeezed
The COVID-19 pandemic keeps suppressing business performance. For example, motor vehicle tire manufacturer PT Multistrada Arah Sarana Tbk (MASA) has laid off 496 employees since January 2020, MASA management stated in an information disclosure to Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX).
At the same time, news circulated that the government would enforce the Emergency Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) starting July 2, 2021. One of the points in the latest restriction is shopping center operations which are limited until 5:00 p.m.
"Restrictions will not be effective if they only apply to facilities that have the ability and have implemented health protocols. The planned decision will undoubtedly have a major impact on the economy, the business world will be hit once again," the Indonesian Shopping Center Management Association (APPBI) Alphonzus Widjaja said in a statement.
