Indonesia’s Second COVID-19 Wave: What Are the Risks?

The government admits that Indonesia has entered the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Presidential Chief of Staff, Moeldoko, stated that the second wave was inevitable since “in a short time, the number of COVID-19 patients increased very rapidly. It overwhelmed hospitals and medical workers."
The COVID-19 cases in the country keep breaking records. The Health Ministry’s data showed that the new case increase on June 26, 2021, reached 21,095 or the highest since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, bringing the total number to 2,093,962, with 194,776 active cases. At the same time, the number of deaths also went up from 358 to 56,729.
