Energy Transition, Geothermal Becomes the Most Potential NRE Source
Indonesia is heading towards a transition from fossil-based energy to new and renewable energy (NRE/EBT). According to Reforminer Institute Executive Director Komaidi Notonegoro, geothermal could be said to be the most potential new and renewable energy source to accommodate the energy transition policy in the electricity sector. "In addition to having great potential, geothermal electricity production can act as a baseload, as is electricity production, which has been produced from gas and coal," he said on Thursday (6/24).
According to Komaidi, another advantage of geothermal power plants (PLTP) is the capacity factor (CF) that can reach 90 percent. It is higher than the CF of solar power plants (PLTS) at 18 percent and biogas-fired power plants (PLTB) at 30 percent. In addition to PLTP, new and renewable energy plants generally have some obstacles and are intermittent. "Therefore, in operation, it requires backup generators that can operate flexibly as supporting plants to anticipate when PLTS and PLTB can't produce electricity due to weather changes," he said.
