Harita Group’s Nickel Smelter in Halmahera Starts Operation

The Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister, Luhut Binsar Pandjaian, inaugurated the operation of a high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) nickel smelter on Obi Island, South Halmahera. PT Halmahera Persada Lygend owns the HPAL smelter, eating up a total investment of about US$1 billion or Rp 14.4 trillion.
The hydrometallurgical processing center will speed up the mineral downstream processing and support the battery industry and electric vehicles (EV) development. Luhut believed that Indonesia could become the world's leading EV industry. "Indonesia has sufficient resources and reserves of nickel, cobalt, and other supporting minerals, such as copper, aluminum, and tin, which will be the country’s biggest assets in the electric vehicle industry," Luhut explained on Wednesday (6/23).
