PLN to Spend Rp 5 Trillion for Asahan 3 Hydropower Plant
PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will build the Asahan 3 Hydropower Plant (PLTA Asahan 3) with a total capacity of 2x87 megawatts (MW) in North Sumatra. The state-owned electricity company expects it to operate in March 2024, with an investment of Rp 5 trillion.
PLN Director of Mega Projects and Renewables, M. Ikhsan Asaad, revealed that the project would be one of PLN's Green transformation projects to gradually increase the renewable portion in the country’s energy mix following the increasingly high electricity demand. Ikhsan ensured that the Asahan 3 hydropower power project would continue despite the pandemic by maintaining the health protocol compliance.
"In February 2021, we managed to divert the flow of Asahan River to the diversion channel so that the intake weir construction could start immediately," Ikhsan explained in a written statement, Tuesday (15/6). While on the downstream side, the excavation work for the underground powerhouse, which began in June 2020, has been completed in May 2021. The powerhouse is the primary building where turbines and generators operate underground at a depth of approximately 150 meters.
