Prabowo Purchases Firearms, Here’s the Details
The Ministry of Defense's plan to purchase firearms worth Rp 1,760 trillion has drawn criticism. Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) questioned the project as it uses foreign debt. Commission I House Member Effendi Simbolon said most Defense Commission members questioned the proposal for firearms expenditure funding.
According to Effendi, the House rejected arms spending on debt because it would burden the next government. "What if the new government doesn't want to continue this program, it will be stalled," said the PDI-P politician on June 2, 2021.
Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto said the plan is still being discussed with the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), the Ministry of Finance, and other stakeholders. He said the proposed spending arose following the aging firearms owned by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). "The replacement is done so that Indonesia is ready to face the rapidly growing dynamics," he said.
