New E-Commerce Regulation: Merchant Identification

e-commerce
Summary

The Ministry of Trade will implement new rules for merchants on electronic systems trade (PMSE) or e-commerce. The Ministry’s Director General of Domestic Trade, Oke Nurwan, said that e-commerce platform providers, merchants, and intermediary facility providers must have a business license as regulated in Government Regulation (PP) No. 80/2019 on PMSE and Trade Minister Regulation No. 50/2020.

Thus, he said, overseas merchants are required to have a business license in Indonesia and register with the marketplace they are participating in. "The marketplace must include the merchant's country of origin," Oke said on Monday (5/17). According to him, the identification would make it easier for consumers to track and understand transactions with foreign sellers. "The government can more easily identify merchants and monitor them in case of a violation," he said.
