Coal Companies Shift Towards Green Energy to Reduce Emissions
The Indonesian Coal Mining Association (ICMA) will support the government's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, coal mining and steam power plants (PLTU) contribute to a third of 1.263 gigatons carbon emissions. "We see the Government's desire to achieve net-zero emission by 2060 as crucial," said ICMA Chairman Pandu Sjahrir in the CEO Talks Webinar: Sustainability Executiveconnect, Wednesday (5/5).
According to him, the technological developments in the coal mining sector and steam power plants play an essential role in reducing carbon emissions, for example, by shifting the fuel usage from diesel to biodiesel for mining operations, rooftop solar power plants for electrical energy sources to replace generators, and ultra-supercritical technology to increase efficiency and reduce pollution from PLTU.
In addition, APBI will collaborate with third parties to study carbon credit and carbon trading schemes for mining business players. "So, in the next two to three years, there will be a major industrial transformation toward a net-zero emissions country," Pandu said.
