Rescue Efforts Intensify Despite Hopes are Running Out
Rescue efforts intensify for the missing Indonesian Navy's submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, although hopes are running out. The Indonesian Navy has deployed five warships and 400 personnel, assisted by several ships from other institutions, including the Indonesian National SAR Agency (Basarnas). Meanwhile, more and more countries offer assistance, such as Turkey, South Korea, the United States, Germany, and France. Whereas Singapore, Malaysia, and India have dispatched their submarine rescue ships and will arrive this weekend and next week.
Nanggala went missing in the waters north of Bali, Wednesday (4/21), with 53 sailors on board. The German-made submarine was conducting a torpedo drill around 96 kilometers (51 nautical miles) north of Bali. The navy lost contact with the submarine at 4:30 a.m. local time. An aerial search by the Indonesian military found an oil spill where the submarine was diving. But until now, the search has not been able to find the whereabouts of the submarine.
