Music Royalty Scheme Expanded, How Will It Affect?
President Joko Widodo issued a regulation requiring song or music users to pay royalties to their creators, as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 56/2021 on the Management of Royalties for Song and/or Music Copyright signed on March 30, 2021.
"Everyone can make commercial use of songs and/or music in commercial public services by paying royalties to the creators, copyright holders and/or rights owners," as written in Article 3 Paragraph 1 of the said regulation.
The followings are types of businesses that are required to pay royalties for music or songs, as stated in the regulation:
- Seminars and commercial conferences.
- Restaurants, cafes, pubs, bars, bistros, nightclubs, and discotheques.
- Music concerts.
- Aircraft, buses, trains, and ships.
- Exhibition and bazaar.
- Cinema.
- Call waiting tone.
- Banks and offices.
- Shops.
- Recreation center.
- Television broadcasting.
- Radio broadcasting.
- Hotels, hotel rooms, and hotel facilities.
- Karaoke business.
