Will the Recently-Formed Review Team Pave Ways for ITE Law Revision?
The government formed a special team to review the revision of Law No. 19/2016 in conjunction with Law No. 11/2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE Law). The team responded to President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) urge, who stated the need to review the ITE Law articles, which were deemed detrimental to some people. The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, said that the government formed two teams to review the ITE Law.
The first team will gather feedbacks from various parties such as the public, academics, and other stakeholders. This team would discuss the implementation of the ITE Law, particularly articles that were deemed detrimental. Meanwhile, another group is tasked with reviewing possible revisions to the ITE Law. Mahfud said the team would work for three months. The study results by the two teams became the basis for consideration of the steps the government would take. "If the team's decision has to be revised, we will convey it to the House of Representatives (DPR)," he said on Monday (2/22).
