Summary

Indonesia will become the largest sugar consumer from India starting this year. The Director-General of the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), Abinash Varma, revealed that the deal with Indonesia could even cover the export decline to Iran, which has been India's biggest sugar consumer for quite some time.

MEIR Commodities India’s data showed that Indonesia would import more than 1 million tons of sugar in 2021, three times bigger than the total imports from October 2019-September 2020 at 300 thousand tons. Meanwhile, the ISMA estimates that Indonesia will import up to 2 million tons, higher than Iran's purchase figure at 1.4 million tons during October 2019-September 2020.
