The Quandary of the New National Police Chief

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo officially proposed Comr. Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo as a candidate for National Police Chief to replace Gen. Idham Azis. State Secretary Pratikno announced the decision at the House of Representatives (DPR) building on Wednesday (1/13). Accompanying Praktino, Speaker of the DPR Puan Maharani and three of his deputies: Azis Syamsuddin, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, and Rachmat Gobel.

After this, the Negotiation Body of the DPR will hold a meeting to schedule a plenary session. The DPR leaders then read out the recommendation letter from the president at the plenary session and assigned the Law Commission to carry out a fit and proper test of the candidates proposed by the president.

Chairman of the DPR Law Commission, Herman Herry, said that they already held an internal meeting to discuss the technicalities and schedule for the fit and proper test. The commission will also invite the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) and the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) to ask for input on the candidate.
