Power Plant Projects See 15.5GW Reduction as Pandemic Saps Consumption
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is discussing the 2021-2030 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), citing a possibility of reducing the power generation capacity that PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) will build in the next 10 years in line with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
ESDM Ministry's Director-General of Electricity, Rida Mulyana, said approximately 15.5 gigawatts (GW) of capacity would be reduced based on the RUPTL 2021-2030 compared to the previous period's RUPTL. "We are currently evaluating this because there is a part [which were reduced] of the 35 GW Electricity Program," he said in a press conference, Wednesday (1/13).
Moreover, the 2021-2030 RUPTL is also more moderate in projecting electricity growth due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, targeting only 4.9 percent annually for the next 10 years. "The previous RUPTL was quite aggressive, reaching around 6.4 percent. Now, it has changed to 4.9 percent, resulting in reduced electricity consumption and production. Thus, we have fewer required generators," Rida said.
