Pertamina Hulu Mahakam Implements HWU to Drill Development Wells

Summary

PT Pertamina Hulu Mahakam (PHM) is implementing the Hydraulic Workover Unit (HWU) method to drill new development wells in the Mahakam Block, the first in Indonesia. "Usually, the HWU method is for advanced well drilling. We hope that the innovation can boost Pertamina and Indonesia's oil and gas production," PT Elnusa Tbk director of operations & business development, Arief Riyanto, revealed in a written statement.

The project uses Elnusa's HWU EHR-12, an independently manufactured unit, to replace the function of jack-up rigs. The work will last three months and aims to complete five wells. Currently, Elnusa has already completed the first 1,215-meter deep well in 19 days.

"This success is due to the synergy of PT Pertamina's subsidiaries, such as PHM and Elnusa, which consistently continue to innovate and do their best in maintaining national oil and gas production amid the COVID-19 pandemic," PHM vice president of well construction and intervention, Fata Yunus explained. PHM and Elnusa's collaboration focused on design, equipment fabrication to the project execution.
