MUI New Board: Free from Opposition and Radicalism?
The Indonesian Ulema Council’s (MUI) 10th National Conference has appointed Miftachul Achyar as the council’s chairman for the 2020-2025 period. In his speech to conclude the meeting on Friday (11/27), Miftachul said that the ulema's duty is to preach without ridiculing. "Embracing, not attacking. Loving, not competing. Educating, not aiming. Fostering, not insulting. Looking for a solution, not sympathy. Defending, not criticizing. I hope those are the focus of our period of service," he stated.
Miftachul's speech was similar to President Joko Widodo's message when he opened the meeting on November 25, 2020. Jokowi said that the government would fully support MUI's attempts to create blessed Islamic practices in a pluralistic nation. He also believed that the Islamic culture in Indonesia should be identical with persuasive and peaceful preaches. Preachers should not spread hatred, be extreme, and self-righteous. "Because the preach essence is to invite people to the path of goodness," he continued.
