What is the Government's Strategy to Expand the Food Estate Project?
The government will expand the food estate development all across Indonesia. Initially, the project only involved several regions. The director of food crop protection at the Agriculture Ministry’s Directorate-General of Food Crops, Edy Purnawan, said that the food estate concept could increase food production while helping farmers to increase their income through industrial schemes.
Edy revealed that some food estate projects were currently underway. The largest one would be in Central Kalimantan with 30 thousand hectares of an area, specifically to cultivate rice, while the North Sumatran project would focus on horticultural commodities or vegetables and fruit. "The project aims to handle agricultural development from upstream to downstream through a corporation," he stated on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.
