Renewable Energy Bill to Regulate Nuclear Power Plants
The government and the House of Representatives (DPR) are currently processing the Renewable Energy Bill (RUU EBT). The draft of the green energy law will also contain provisions on nuclear power plants’ development due to the inclusion of nuclear as the new energy. Article 7, Paragraph 1, states that nuclear power is the source of energy for nuclear power plants. Meanwhile, according to Article 7, Paragraph 2, nuclear reactors consist of nuclear power plants and thermal power stations.
Based on Article 7, Paragraph 3, the construction, operation, and decommissioning of nuclear power plants are the authority of special state-owned enterprises (BUMNK). But, Article 7, Paragraph 4, regulates that state-owned enterprises (BUMN), cooperatives, or private entities may take the role as well. However, Article 7, Paragraph 5, states that the government may determine nuclear power plants’ construction after receiving the House of Representatives’ blessings.
Based on Article 8 of the Renewable Energy Bill, the central government shall form a nuclear power supervisory agency that directly answers to the president. It is responsible for the nuclear power plant’s safety and security and any activity involving nuclear power.
