Prabowo's Steady Step Towards Presidential Chair in 2024

The extraordinary congress of the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) officially re-elected Prabowo Subianto as the general chairman and chairman of the supervisory board for the 2020-2025 period. This decision was taken in a plenary meeting which took place Saturday, August 8. Gerindra spokesman Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak said the entire regional leadership council (DPD) unanimously asked Prabowo to lead again. After that, Prabowo as the sole formator will elect the Gerindra Central Leadership Council (DPP).

In the 2019 General Election, Gerindra won 17.5 million votes or 78 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR), placing it as the second-largest party by vote acquisition and the third-largest party in parliament. After being defeated by Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in the 2019 Presidential Election, Prabowo decided to join the governing coalition. As compensation, Gerindra got two seats in the cabinet. One of them is the Minister of Defense which is held by Prabowo himself.
