Consolidating State Aviation-Tourism Companies, What Are the Benefits?

Merger
Summary

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) plans to merge several State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) in the aviation and tourism sectors. The merger is considered crucial to recover the COVID-19 pandemic-hit aviation and tourism sectors. "In case of another pandemic, the tourism and aviation sectors would have better economic foundations and run faster," Jokowi said in a limited meeting at the Palace, Thursday (8/6).

The tourism and aviation sectors are two of the contributors to Indonesia's economic contraction of 5.32 percent in the second quarter of 2020. In that period, foreign tourist arrivals were only 482,000, an 81-percent drop from the previous quarter (quarter-on-quarter/QoQ), and down 87 percent year-on-year (YoY).
