Prabowo to Lead Indonesia’s Food Security: A 2019 Political Leftover?
President Joko Widodo appointed the Defense Minister, Prabowo Subianto, as the leader of the food security program. As a result, Prabowo now has the authority to take care of strategic food reserves. “He will receive the support of the Agriculture Minister and the Public Works and Housing Minister,” Jokowi revealed while visiting a prospective food estate in Pulang Pisau, Central Kalimantan, on Thursday (7/9).
Jokowi also stated that he would form a new institution to take care of food security. It would supervise the development of the food estate, including those developed through cooperation schemes with investors. “State-owned enterprise (BUMN) or other business schemes are welcomed,” he said. Jokowi expected that the food estate could meet the needs of a variety of foods, from rice, cassava, corn, to chili.
