To Reopen or Not To Reopen Schools Amid Pandemic

Summary

The Education and Culture Ministry will start the 2020/2021 academic year in July 2020. The ministry’s acting director-general for elementary and secondary education, Hamid Muhammad, ensured that the government would tighten health protocols in operational schools.

However, the ministry planned to only open schools in the green zone or considered safe from COVID-19 transmission. Hamid stated that the Education and Culture Ministry would establish particular guidelines and systems for teaching and learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the implementation of health protocols in schools should be the regional administration’s responsibility. He also mentioned that many regions would likely continue long-distance learning, especially for schools in the red and yellow zones.
