Why Are Big Bank Write-Offs Spiking?
The number of credit write-offs in large banks increased in the first quarter of 2020, indicating the severity of damages done by the Covid-19 pandemic on the banking industry and national economy.
The total of bank write-offs could keep increasing along with the spiking non-performing loans (NPLs). Financial Services Authority’s (OJK) data showed that, in the first quarter of 2020, the banking industry’s NPL ratio was at 2.77 percent, slightly higher than the number at the end of 2019 at 2.30 percent, but still far from the upper limit at 5 percent.
