Politically Motivated Aids Threaten Democracy
The Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) issued Circular Letter No. 0266/K.BAWASLU/PM.00.00/04/2020 on the prevention of regional election (Pilkada) violations. The letter also prohibits the politicization of social aids for the people affected by the Covid-19 pandemic by regional heads wanting to compete again in the next elections.
According to one of Bawaslu officials, Rahmat Bagja, the agency would also send the letter to the Home Affairs Minister, Tito Karnavian. Bawaslu asked Tito to make them understand that politicizing social aids are not right, not to mention insensitive. Bawaslu also ordered its representatives in provinces, regencies, and cities across Indonesia to socialize the provision as preventive actions against any money politics to prospective voters.
