How Covid-19 May Cancel 2020 Regional Election

Summary

General Elections Commission (KPU) has decided to delay several preliminary events related to the 2020 regional election because of the COVID-19 pandemic: the inauguration of the voting committee (PPS), the data verification for the candidates, the creation of voter’s data updater (PPDP), and the voter’s data checking.

The KPU’s commissioner, Viryan Azis, admitted that his side had not yet decided when would postponement end since the pandemic had not yet reached its peak in Indonesia. KPU was also unsure whether to postpone the elections or continue according to the schedule. In the initial plan, the elections would occur on September 23, 2020.
