Cantrang Boats Discretion Applies in Natuna

Summary

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry permitted trawler-equipped (cantrang) boats to operate in Natuna waters, Riau. Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry's Director-General of Capture Fisheries Zulficar Mochtar said that the permit is the government's strategy to monitor Natuna waters, especially in the northern part, which is prone to illegal foreign vessels.

According to Zulficar, some 30 cantrang ships holding a Certificate of Sea (SKM) from Central Java are allowed to operate in the North Natuna's Sea Exclusive Economic Zone. These vessels complement 815 fishing vessels weighing over 30 Gross Tonnage (GT), which operate in the southern part of North Natuna. The government will also deploy 300 new ships to the region.
