Mineral and Coal Sector Endures Investment Slowdown

Summary

The government predicted the investments in the mineral and coal sector would start to slow down in 2021. Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s Director-General of the Mineral and Coal Sector, Bambang Gatot Ariyono, argued that the completion of several smelter constructions from 2021 to 2024 would lead to a decrease of investment in the industry.

Bambang also explained that the investment in the mineral and coal sector had been fluctuating since 2015, following the inconsistent prices of mining commodities. He predicted that the investment level would go down from US$ 5.6 billion to US$ 4.3 billion in 2021-2022. The capital inflow would also expectedly keep dropping from US$ 3.22 billion to US$ 3.17 billion in 2023-2024.
