Indonesia Targets Nuclear Forensic Laboratory Establishment in 2029
Indonesia aims to establish an integrated nuclear forensic services laboratory by 2029, as outlined in the roadmap from the Research Organization for Nuclear Energy (ORTN), one of the research organizations under the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Nuclear forensics involves the techniques used to trace the origin of nuclear materials or radioactive substances, intending to identify their sources, history, transfer routes, and considerations for evidence preservation.
Syaiful Bakhri, Head of the BRIN's Research Center for Nuclear Fuel and Radioactive Waste Recycling Technology, highlighted the involvement of three key entities—BRIN, the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN), and the Police—in nuclear forensics activities. He emphasized the critical need for a nuclear forensic laboratory to safeguard the safety and security of nuclear material and radioactive substances. "BRIN has engaged in nuclear forensics activities to proactively address potential issues concerning the use of nuclear materials or radioactive substances," stated Bakhri on December 16th.
