Controversial Criminal Code Poses a Threat to Investment Climate
The Government and the House of Representatives (DPR) passed the Criminal Code on Tuesday. House Legal Commission Chairman Bambang Wuryanto said the Criminal Code was passed in the 11th Plenary Meeting of the Second Session Period of Session Year 2022-2023. According to him, this regulation carries the mission of decolonization, consolidation, and harmonization of criminal law. "The Criminal Code Law is essential to reform the law on a national scale and adjust to the times," Bambang said.
Eight of the nine factions in parliament gave full approval. Meanwhile, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction approved with notes. Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly said the Criminal Code had been drafted openly and carefully. He also realizes that the Criminal Code is not a perfect product. Therefore, Yasonna invited parties who objected to submitting a material review to the Constitutional Court. "We will conduct socialization. Three years is enough for the government and law enforcement," he said.
