The Constitutional Court Decides Jokowi Cannot Run for Vice President
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's chances of running as a vice presidential candidate in the 2024 Presidential Election are closed. The Constitutional Court ruled that a person who had served as president for two terms could not run as a vice presidential candidate.
The Judicial review was submitted by Berkarya Party chairman Muchdi Purwopranjono and Berkarya Party Secretary General Fauzan Rachmansyah, who hope the court will allow a president who has served two terms to run for vice president.
The Berkarya Party reviews Article 169 letter n and Article 227 letter i of Law No. 7/2017 on Elections. The Berkarya Party argues that Article 7 of the 1945 Constitution does not limit the elected president's and vice president's right to run for another term of office.
However, the court decided to reject the judicial review. "Rejecting the petition of the applicant in its entirety," Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court Anwar Usman said on Tuesday.
