Kanjuruhan Tragedy Tarnishes Indonesia’s Football History
Arema Malang versus Persebaya Surabaya match of BRI Liga 1 at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang, ended in tragedy. At least 129 people died, including two police officers, as riots broke out as Persebaya secured victory over Arema by 3-2.
The riots started when thousands of dissatisfied Aremania fans invaded the field, and police personnel fired tear gas to dispel them. "Supporters ran to a point at door 12 of Kanjuruhan Stadium. When this buildup occurred, many of them experienced shortness of breath," East Java Police Chief Inspector General Nico Afinta said in a press conference at the Malang Police Headquarters on Sunday.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo immediately ordered the All-Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) to temporarily suspend the BRI Liga 1 2022/2023 until the evaluation and improvement of security procedures are carried out. "I especially ask the National Police Chief to investigate this case thoroughly," he said.
