Govt to Stop Fossil Fuel Vehicle Production by 2035

Summary

Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan stated that the government plans to stop the production of all combustion-engine vehicles in 2035. He emphasized that the government is serious about using electric vehicles for daily activities, including in central and regional governments. The government must take this step to reduce Indonesia's dependence on crude oil, which mostly are still imported.

"We hope that by 2035 there will be no more domestically produced combustion cars; all will use electric vehicles so that we will reduce oil imports due to reduced usage," Luhut said on Tuesday.

To encourage the use of electric vehicles in Indonesia, Luhut said President Joko Widodo had instructed the use of electric vehicles as official vehicles for the central and regional governments. Jokowi also ordered to start procuring electric vehicles as official vehicles for the central government this year. "Now the president has ordered the use of the state budget to procure electric vehicles this year and more to come next year," he said.
