Prabowo Becomes the First Presidential Candidate in 2024

Gerindra Party general chairman Prabowo Subianto has announced that he will run for president in 2024 during the party's national leadership meeting (Rapimnas) on August 12. Prabowo claimed that 34 regional executive boards (DPD) wanted him to run for president. "I hereby declare that with a full sense of responsibility, I accept a tour request to be nominated as a candidate for president of the Republic of Indonesia," he stated. Prabowo said his defeat in the 2019 presidential election did not discourage him. "Some people ask, as a joke, how many times have you lost? Why do you want to do that again? Maybe they don't understand the meaning of a fighter," he said.

Gerindra secretary-general Ahmad Muzani revealed the party's cadres did not even consider other names. Besides, Prabowo is the most popular figure according to various surveys. "The second is his performance as the Defense Minister gives a positive meaning to the Jokowi-Maruf administration," Ahmad said.
