Assessing Omicron's Risk to the Economy
Indonesian Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati said the government is aware of the COVID-19 Omicron variant's impact on the country's economy. The emergence of a variant of concern (VoC), which has a 500 percent faster transmission, added uncertainty to the global economic outlook. At the end of this year, Sri Mulyani said the Indonesian economy could grow around four percent. "With this achievement, we hope that the economic recovery in Indonesia will continue," she said.
Currently, 17 countries have already detected the Omicron variant, which was first emerged in South Africa. Most recently, Japan confirmed the first case of the Omicron variant on Tuesday. Quoting Kyodo News, the Omicron case was found in a Namibian man in his 30s who tested positive for COVID-19 after undergoing a test upon arrival at Narita Airport on Sunday.
