Indonesia's Zero Emissions: When Will It Happen?
The government is in talks to determine the net-zero emissions target. There are four options for Indonesia's zero carbon emission target: 2045, 2050, 2060, and 2070. Director of Environment for the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN), Medrilzam, said the discussion about setting the emission-free year target is still ongoing. The decision is also still waiting for President Joko Widodo's approval.
Minister of National Development Planning/Head of Bappenas Suharso Monoarfa expects that the peak of greenhouse gas emissions will not shift far from 2033 or 2034 to achieve the zero-carbon emission target. Every shift in a year can push back five to ten years of achieving zero carbon emissions. "The Minister of National Development Planning has submitted several scenarios. These all have consequences which I think require massive changes," Medrilzam said in Katadata webinar "Earth Day Forum 2021", Wednesday (4/21).
