Nearing the Enactment, Job Creation Law Bombarded by Criticisms

Summary

Criticisms on Law No. 11/2020 on the Job Creation intensify ahead of its enactment. The latest Greenness of Stimulus Index (GSI) report compiled by Vivid Economics and Finance for Biodiversity (F4B) Initiative revealed that the Job Creation Law basically lowered Indonesia's environmental stimulus score. "This regulation has been criticized since it can negatively impact nature and the climate," the report explained.

In composing the report, the Vivid Economics and Finance for Biodiversity Initiative assessed the stimulus to climate change and the biodiversity support of the G20 countries. As a result, the passage of the Job Creation Law added to the list of laws deregulating and encouraging industries that were not environmentally friendly, such as mining, oil, and gas sectors. Vivid Economics in its May 2020 report explored the revised version of the Mineral and Coal Law and found out that the new policy would undermine the global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve nature.
