Government Disbands the Islamic Defenders Front, Who's Next?
The Indonesian government officially designated the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) as a forbidden organization, Wednesday (12/30). With the Joint Decree of the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Law and Human Rights, Minister of Communication and Information, the Attorney General, the Chief of Police, and the Head of the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), FPI - a hardline Islamic organization - is prohibited from carrying out activities and its symbols are prohibited from being displayed.
Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights, Edward "Eddy" Hiariej, said that FPI was disbanded because its statutes and activities were contrary to the Law on Community Organization. In addition, FPI is not eligible to extend the Certificate of Registration (SKT) as an organization. There is also a reason that dozens of FPI members have been involved in acts of terrorism, and hundreds of its members have been involved in other criminal acts.
