The Future of Telecommunication Regulation After BRTI Disbandment

Smartphone and Global Internet
Summary

President Joko Widodo signed Presidential Regulation No. 112/2020 on November 26, 2020, effectively disbanding ten state institutions, including the Indonesian Telecommunication Regulatory Body (BRTI). In the decree, the government stated that the disbandment was to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the bureaucracy while achieving the national development strategic plan.

After this rule came into effect, BRTI's authority is handed over to the Ministry of Communication and Information. The Communication and Information Minister Johnny Gerald Plate said that the government will maintain the independence principle, which BRTI previously upheld, in regulating the telecommunications industry. He said BRTI disbandment did not violate international regulations. Instead, it was in line with President Jokowi's goal to streamline the overlapping powers of state institutions. "This creates an efficient government system and optimal bureaucratic effectiveness," he said, Monday (11/30).
