New America-Indonesia Partnership: What Is the Trigger?
The governments of Indonesia and the United States have agreed to cooperate in the defense and economy sectors. They were the key discussion points of a meeting between the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and Indonesian Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi.
Retno said that both Indonesia and the United States agreed to increase the defense sector partnership, consisting of strengthening defense capabilities and military equipment to reach the Minimum Essential Force (MEF), synergies in military training, intelligence cooperation, and maritime security cooperation. "We also agreed to strengthen economic cooperation, particularly to strengthen global supply chains and speed up the economic recovery," she revealed on Thursday (10/29).
Meanwhile, Mike Pompeo stated he was very enthusiastic about the partnership. According to him, the talks also discussed the rejection of claims made by the Chinese Communist Party in the South China Sea. "We hope to collaborate to ensure maritime security and protection," he said.
