Job Creation Law Disregards Human Rights
Protests against the Job Creation Law came from numerous local and foreign parties. Criticism of the omnibus law highlights all aspects, one of which is human rights (HAM). From abroad, the attempt to cancel the Job Creation Law comes from the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR). "APHR asks the President of the Republic of Indonesia to cancel the regulation," the chairman of APHR who is also a member of the Malaysian parliament, Charles Santiago, stated.
Charles argued that the aim of the omnibus law was only to encourage foreign investment at the expense of labor rights, environmental protection aspects, and democratic life. "The law is not based on economics, but on opportunism," he said. Meanwhile, the executive director of Amnesty International Indonesia, Usman Hamid, also worried that the Job Creation Law could violate human rights and, at the same time, contradicts Indonesia's international obligations to protect human rights, especially the right to work and the right at work.
